Skills Assessment Criteria

6U:

  1. Coachability/Sportsmanship:  Follows directions, does not distract or touch other players
  2. Dugout – Helmet on, follows direction to not have bat until on deck
  3. Batting – Hits consistently off tee
  4. Base Running – Runs to first base without undue hesitation and/or dramatics
  5. Fielding – Stays alert while on field, watches ball in play, moves to get ground ball and place in bucket

 

8U:

  1. Coachability/Sportsmanship:  Follows directions, does not distract or touch other players
  2. Dugout – Helmet on, follows direction to not have bat until on deck
  3. Batting – Proper and safe positioning in batter’s box, consistently hits coach-pitched (from knee) ball from 25-30 feet without requiring coach and/or parent intervention
  4. Base Running – Puts bat down safely, runs to first base without undue hesitation or coaching required
  5. Infield – Stays alert while on field, watches ball in play, moves to get ground ball and make a throw in proper direction (high accuracy not required)
  6. Catching Thrown Balls – Alert, eyes on thrower, does not flinch or try to dodge ball, glove up and between thrower and body when coach lightly throws ball to chest area from 10-15 feet (catching ball not a pass/fail criterion)
  7. Throwing The Ball – Does not throw ball if receiver is unaware and/or not looking

 

10U/12U: 

  1. Coachability/Sportsmanship:  Follows directions, does not distract or touch other players
  2. Dugout – Helmet on, follows direction to not have bat until on deck
  3. Batting – Proper and safe positioning in batter’s box,  good batting form, does not flinch or jump out of box at strikes pitched by coach from the mound at moderate speed, swings bat at strikes (hitting ball not a pass/fail criterion)
  4. Base Running – Puts bat down safely, runs to first base without undue hesitation or coaching required
  5. Infield – Stays alert while on field, goes to “baseball ready”, watches ball in play, moves to get ground ball and make throw in proper direction
  6. Catching Thrown Balls – Alert, eyes on thrower, does not flinch or try to dodge ball, glove up and between thrower and body when coach throws ball to chest area from 25-30 feet
  7. Catching Pop Flys – Alert, eye on batter/thrower, moves feet to get to position for catching, makes catching attempts with glove up in proper location (catching and holding pop flies not a pass/fail criterion)
  8. Throwing The Ball – Does not throw ball if receiver is unaware and/or not looking
